Mountain Excursions:
Schilthorn - Piz Gloria (2,970 m / 9,742 ft):
Half- or Full-day excursion (approx. 2 1/2 hours by train from Bern to the top). The most spectacular 360° panorama in the Alps! Dine-and-wine in the world's first revolving restaurant at an altitude of nearly 3,000 meters. Impressive views embrace some 200 snow-capped peaks, ranging from the Bernese Alps to Mont Blanc in France and Germany's Black Forest.
Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe (3,454m / 11,330 ft):
Full-day excursion (approx. 3 1/4 hours by train from Bern to the top). Snow and ice 100% guaranteed! The UNESCO World Heritage offers the Sphinx observation hall, an impressive Ice Palace and a hiking plateau in the glacier - these are year-round attractions up on the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe. Summer attractions include a skilift, husky-drawn sledging and adventure activities.
Mt. Titlis (3,020 m / 9,906 ft):
Full-day excursion (approx. 4 3/4 hours by train from Bern to the top). Snow and Fun all year round; the Titlis is the highest alpine tourist destination in Central Switzerland, and the Titlis Rotair is the world's first revolving cable car. Visitors will be impressed by attractions such as the Ice Flyer chairlift or the Glacier Park. From Bern, this destination can be reached through the Bernese Oberland via Interlaken with a very scenic ride - the Golden Pass - or drive along Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and over the Brünig Pass.
Zermatt: incl. Gornergrat (3,089 m / 10,120 ft) or Klein Matterhorn (3,883 m / 12,721 ft):
Full-day excursion (approx. 3 hours by train from Bern to the top). The journey takes you through the Lötschberg-Tunnel and then, on the Glacier Express route climbing through rugged valley landscape, to Zermatt. Then continue this popular excursion either by cogwheel railway to the Gornergrat or by gondola to the Klein Matterhorn to enjoy great views of the world famous Matterhorn.
Schynige Platte with Alpine Garden and "Teddyland" (1,967 m / 6,452 ft):
Half-day or Full-day excursion, open May - October (approx. 2 1/4 hours by train from Bern to the top). Take the cosy cogwheel railway to this superb vantage point, where the views of the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau are acclaimed as the finest. Other attractions include extensive hiking trails, the Lowa Hiking Shoe Test Center and, especially for our little ones, a large Teddy Bear exhibition. The Alpine Garden is a famous botanical attraction that comprises some 500 different flowering plants and ferns grouped in 15 groups of near-natural locations. From mid-June until late September, the Alpine Garden is an ever changing blaze of colour.
Gurten (864 m / 2,831 ft):
Half-day (or Full-day) excursion; 5 minutes from Bern-Wabern to the top; take tram or bus from the main train station to get to Wabern. Bern's mountain which can easily be reached from the city center offering great views of the city and all kind of activities for people of all ages during summer and winter.
City Excursions:
Lucerne - City of Lights:
Half- or Full-day excursion (approx. 60 minutes by train from Bern). One of Switzerland's most popular excursion destinations is within just an hour traveling time from Bern - there are various routes to get from Bern to Lucerne: either going or on your return, take the scenic ride on the Golden Pass train via Interlaken and over the Brünig Pass (travel time 3 hours). Lucerne is ideally situated in the historic and scenic heart of what many believe to be the "true" Switzerland - picture mountains, lakes, cowbells, alpine villages and meadows full of Edelweiss. Lucerne is renowned for its attractive townscape, historic Chapel Bridge and shopping facilities.
Zurich - Switzerland's financial capital:
Half- or Full-day excursion (approx. 60 minutes by train from Bern). Zurich is Switzerland's largest city, and with its famous "Bahnhofstrasse" (business and shopping street) is considered the country's most important financial, industrial and commercial center. It is also known to be the intellectual capital of the nation and particularly receptive to contemporary trends associated with younger generations. Zurich and the surrounding region is home to the biggest number of museums and exhibitions in Switzerland - the city offers a wealth of history, architecture, and culture, and is an absolutely charming, interesting and beautiful place to visit.
Basel - cultural capital of Switzerland:
Half- or Full-day excursion (approx. 55 minutes by train from Bern). In Basel you can live and breathe art and culture. The city promises "Culture Unlimited" and sparkles with an incomparable programme of culture and leisure activities. The city also is known as an important trade center, and an interesting place of archtiecture offering both - old historic buidlings as well as modern structures designed by world famous architects.
Geneva - peace capital of the world:
Half- or Full-day excursion (approx. 100 minutes by train from Bern). Known for being headquarters for many international organizations, Geneva also features the world's tallest fountain, the Jet d'Eau, Cathedrals, the University, the Opera and numerous museums and libraries. Check out the Horology Museum that highlights the importance of clock and watch making to the Genevan economy.
Thun - Gateway to the Bernese Alps:
Half- or Full-day excursion (approx. 20 minutes by train from Bern). Thun (pronounced "Toon") is one of the most original towns in Switzerland. It occupies an admirable site with magnificent views of the Bernese Alps and is much overlooked by visitors pressing on to Interlaken. With its picturesque castle, the quaint medieval Old Town, and Lake Thun, one of the loveliest and largest lakes in Switzerland, Thun is well worth a visit.
Interlaken - in the Heart of the Swiss Alps:
Half- or Full-day excursion (approx. 50 minutes by train from Bern). Interlaken, the small town between the cristal-clear lakes of Thun and Brienz is surrounded by Alpine pearls such as sparkling streams, fantastic falls and extraordinary mountain scenery including the famous peaks of the Eiger, the Moench and the Jungfrau. Don't miss strolling along Interlaken's famous "Höheweg" promenade - it is one of the best locations in Switzerland for souvenir and watch shopping, and offers superbe views of the Jungfrau mountain range. Consider combining the excursion to Interlaken with visiting other sights of the Jungfrau region, such as the Jungfraujoch or the Schilthorn, the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum or the St. Beatus Caves.
Montreux - City of the Swiss Riviera:
Half- or Full-day excursion (approx. 90 minutes by train from Bern). This attractive excursion crosses the "border" between German and French-speaking Switzerland and takes you to the shores of Lake Geneva. Enjoy the mild climate and the beautiful terraced vineyards of Lavaux that are part of the UNESCO world heritage. While in Montreux, you want to consider visiting one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Switzerland, the Chateau de Chillon: in the 13th century this castle was built in a unique setting on the shores of Lake Geneva, and today also serves as a typical postcard souvenir from Switzerland. There are various routes to get from Bern to Montreux, either via Lausanne or with the scenic Golden Pass train through the Simmental Valley via Gstaad (travel time approx. 3 hours).

Cheese Factories:
Affoltern i.E. - Cheesevillage: Half-day excursion (approx. 60 minutes by train and bus from Bern). The birthplace of the "real" Swiss Cheese - the Emmental Cheese; experience modern cheese making in a traditional environment, and find out why this cheese has large wholes.
Gruyeres: Half-day excursion (approx. 90 minutes by train from Bern). The small village of Gruyeres is very charming and is easily reachable from Bern. You can walk the cobblestone road to the old castle and visit the cheese factory - "la maison de Gruyere" - to observe making of the Gruyere Cheese. You might consider combining this excursion with a visit of the Cailler Chocolate Factory in Broc (April through October).
Cruises on Lake Thun or Lake Brienz:
Half-day or evening excursions during April - October. Enjoy a leisurely cruise on a modern motorship or one of the renovated stately steamers. Excellent catering and banquet facilities, theme events and club, company and family festivities, paddle steamer with children's club, evening cruises with entertainment. Cruises on Lake Thun depart at Thun's railway station, cruises on Lake Brienz from Interlaken's Ost station.
Golden Pass Scenic Train:
Full-day excursions. In Spiez or Interlaken you can board the scenic Golden Pass train with its panoramic wagons. Your destination either is Lucerne traveling along Lake Brienz and the Bruenig Pass (travel time 2 hours from Interlaken), or you are heading to Montreux via the Simmental Valley with its famous cows and popular resorts such as Gstaad (travel time 3 hours from Spiez).

Summer Sports:
"Aareschwimmen": (swimming in the River Aare)
Throughout the summer months the River Aare presents a tempting bathing opportunity. You can dive into the clean currents of the Aare to be carried downstream. The "Marzilibad" offers great access to swimming in the Aare and best possible views of the house of parliament. There also are several public indoor- and outdoor pools throughout the city (Wylerbad, Weyermannshaus, Lorrainebad, Ka-We-De and Solbad Schoenbuehl).
Strolling, Hiking, and Biking:

within Bern's city limits, there are some possibilities at the parks and mainly along the Aare River. More options can be found in the surrounding areas.
Golf:
There are six golf courses in the Bern Region:
- the Golfpark Moossee (14 km / 9 miles from Bern) with 18 + 9 holes;
- the Blumisberg Golf & Country Club (19 km / 12 miles from Bern) with 18 holes;
- the Golf Limpachtal (20 km / 12.5 miles from Bern) with 18 holes;
- the Golfclub Oberburg (28 km / 17.5 miles from Bern) with 9 holes;
- the Golf Club Thunersee (30 km / 18.5 miles from Bern) with 9 holes;
- the Golfclub Wylihof (36 km / 22.5 miles from Bern) with 18 holes.

Winter Sports:
Bern is very close to the Bernese Oberland with several reknown mountain resorts. For "real" winter sports activities such as Skiing, Snowboarding, Crosscountry Skiing, Sledging, Tobogganing or Snowshoe Trekking, we suggest to travel to the following ski-areas, which are reached within approx. 90 minutes from Bern:
- The Jungfrauregion with the famous resorts of Grindelwald, Wengen and Muerren offering the ski areas of "Mürren-Schilthorn", "Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen" and "Grindelwald-First" totalling 42 cable cars and lifts, 213 km (132 miles) of groomed downhill ski slopes, several fun-snowparks with rails, half-pipes and more, 30 km (17 miles) cross country trails, and 60 km (37 miles) sledging runs.
- The Saanenland with Gstaad offering several ski areas with 62 cable cars and lifts, 250 km (155 miles) of groomed skiing runs, Boarder Parks, more than 60 km (37 miles) of cross country trails and also numerous sledging runs.
- Adelboden-Lenk with 72 cable cars and lifts, 210 km (130 miles) of groomed ski runs, Boarder Parks with numerous jumps and rails, 86 km (53 miles) cross country trails, and approx. 20 km (12 miles) sledging runs.
Ice Skating:
Ice Skating in Bern is very popular and the city offers three public, artificial ice arenas: the PostFinance Arena Bern-Wankdorf (covered), and the rinks at the Weyermannshaus and at the Ka-We-De.

In view of its size, the city of Bern offers quite a large number of various entertainment options; there's always something going on - at a theater, or at the numerous bars, lounges and clubs.
Grand Casino Kursaal Bern: 
The Kursaal and Casino offer a whole palette of possibilities, all under one roof. It is an arena-like theater that is equipped with two lifting platforms including the Casino Bern and the Hotel Allegro with 5 restaurants and 3 bars. The Grand Casino Bern offers various table games such as Black Jack, Poker and Roulette, as well as slotmachines. At the Kursaal, apart from yearly events such as the Bern Jazz Festival, there are various performances on a regular basis.
Stadttheater:
The theater puts on about 370 performances (mainly dramas) per season in all 3 branches of the performing arts, of which about 25 are totally new productions. Music is provided by the Bern Symphony Orchestra.

Arcades:
On 6 km (3.7 miles) you find shop after shop, all connected by long covered promenades - the arcades. On Europe's longest covered shopping street it is a pure delight to leisurely stroll and shop - rain or shine....
Westside:
The newly opend shopping mall includes 55 stores on 23,500 sq. meters (9,075 sq. miles) that leave no wish ungranted: All of the top labels can be found here and current fashion and accessory trends can be found in every price range. In addition to its shops, Westside offers something for everyone: 10 restaurants, 11 theaters, a 4-star hotel and the Bernaqua - Water Park and Spa, a premium wellness and swimming park.

Markets:
Produce Markets: "Open air shopping" right in the heart of town - regular customers from around the world appreciate the diversity and quality of the ample assortment of goods on the farmer's market. The tradition of the produce market right in the middle of Bern goes back more than a century. There are 5 locations: Bundesplatz, Bärenplatz, Waisenhausplatz, Münstergasse and Münsterplattform. The markets take place all year round on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and during summer months, there are additional market days (Thursday on Waisenhausplatz; Wednesday and Friday on Bärenplatz).
Flea Markets: On the first Sunday of each month, there's the popular flea market at the "Grosse Halle" (Reithalle near the Railway Station). In addition,from May through October on every 3rd Saturday of the month, there's a flea market in the Mattenquartier directly on the River Aare. A visit to this market in this unique neighborhood is always exciting.
Christmas Markets: In December, the Old Town houses, dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, provide a fantastic and unique backdrop for the distinctive Bern Christmas markets. The "Münsterplatz" is devoted mainly to arts and crafts while the traditional market is on the "Waisenhausplatz" just a 10-minute walk away.
Events:
Gurten Festival: (in July)

The four-day Gurten Music Festival offers a unique program, great atmosphere, fantastic panoramic views and all in all an unforgettable experience on the Gurten, Bern's mountain. More than 60 Live-Acts and 60 DJs from Pop, Rock, Punk, Electro, Funk, Soul, R'n'B, HipHop, Country, Singer-/Songwriter and Blues are on the program. In addition to bands from all over the world, the Gurten Music Festival also features some famous Swiss musicians.
International Jazz Festival: (March through May)

For ten weeks, world-class live jazz can be heard in Bern thanks to the International Jazz Festival. The first festival took place in 1976, and it has been thrilling jazz fans every year since.
Onion Market: (in November)

The "Zibelemärit" (onion market) is a traditional folk festival which takes place on the fourth Monday every November. Farmers from the surrounding area bring more than 50 tons of onions - in artistically woven plaits - and garlic to the federal capital. Colorful market stalls offer ceramic pots, bread, vegetables and mementos to the visitor. To help resist the winter cold, don't miss the Glühwein stand. The bustle starts at 5.00 h and hundreds of visitors from home and abroad stream through the town. This is the day when cheese, cheesecake, onion cakes and onion soup are on offer in all the restaurants, giving off a spicy aroma. Younger visitors scatter confetti in the streets, and have fun at the fairground.

Zentrum Paul Klee:

opened in 2005, the Zentrum Paul Klee is presenting to the public the world's most important collection of works by Paul Klee (4’000 works, or 40% of his oeuvre). The key services of the cultural centre consist of the presentation of different aspects of the collection, attractive, alternating special exhibitions, a broad offer for children, young people and adults particularly at the Kindermuseum Creaviva, concerts, theatres and other events, together with a multifunctional and multimedia «Museum Street» for visitors to stroll, communicate, rest and recreate.
Einstein House:

The physicist Albert Einstein retained close ties with Bern throughout his life. In 1977 the Albert Einstein Society was able to rent Einstein’s former flat on the second floor of Kramgasse 49, restore the original furnishings, and to open the site to the public as a tribute to the scientific achievements of this great scientist.
Museum of Fine Arts Bern:

The Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Bern is one of the most distinguished in Switzerland. It contains outstanding works spanning eight centuries and includes a total of 3'000 paintings and sculptures as well as approximately 55’000 drawings, prints, photographs, videos and films.
