Lucerne with its stunning lakeside location and mountain sceneries on its doorstep is one of Europe's most charming cities. Lucerne, the city of bridges and towers, is ideally situated in the historic and scenic heart of what many believe to be the "true" Switzerland - picture mountains, lakes, cowbells, Alpine villages and meadows full of Edelweiss. The center, the Old Town of Lucerne is a pedestrian area of cobbled streets bordered by houses, shops and hotels painted in medevial style or decorated with displays of flowers. Above the Old Town is the original city wall from which to admire the splendor and variety of the scenery. Lucerne often is called "the City of Lights": the name goes back to a miracle of light said to have happened here. According to an old legend, an angel showed Lucerne’s first settlers with a light where to build a chapel in honour of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. Once a simple fishermen's village, today Lucerne is a lovely small city with a thriving tourism industry, owing its development mainly to its status as a gateway to Central Switzerland, on the Gotthard route, the important north-south transport axis, sandwiched between the Swiss Plateau and the Alps, but also to the unique picturesque scenery of the region. The city became a center of Swiss history and legend, and is the setting for the most memorable part of the William Tell legend (the bit with the boy and the apple). Lucerne's Chapel Bridge and the Watertower are the well known landmarks, but besides the numerous sights within city limits, Lucerne also serves as an excellent base for many excursions on the lakes and to the mountains in Central Switzerland. Getting to Lucerne: By Plane: The nearest international airport is Zurich Kloten (travel time approx. 50 minutes by car or train). Visitors flying into Basel Mulhouse get to Lucerne within approx. 90 minutes (by bus and train), and from Geneva Cointrin, the journey takes approx. 3 hours by train. By Train: Thanks to its central location, Lucerne can be reached easily from all major destinations in Switzerland. Travelers from abroad on Intercity trains need to change trains: in Basel or Zurich (from Germany), in Zurich (from Austria), in Arth-Goldau (from Italy), and in Bern and/or Olten (from France). For visitors arriving from the west (Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux, the Valais and the Bernese Oberland), the most memorable way to get to Lucerne is traveling with the Golden Pass scenic train. Travelers from/to the south might want to consider taking the scenic train William Tell Express which also includes a steamboat cruise on Lake Lucerne. By Car: Lucerne is located on the Gotthard route - the A2 motorway, which is the north-south axis through Switzerland and the Alps. Thus, the city is well connected to the Swiss network of motorways, and the Lucerne region enjoys great connections to/from the south (Bellinzona in the Ticino, or Milano in Italy), and to/from the north (Basel, or Frankfurt in Germany). Travelers from/to the east connect via Zurich and the A4 motorway, travelers from to the west either drive via Bern (A1 motorway) or consider the more scenic drives via the Bruenig& Pass to Interlaken, or via the Schallenberg Pass and the Emmental to Bern or Thun. >> Lucerne Attractions & ActivitiesLucerne Hotels
