Wengen is a fashionable and well-established mountain resort in the Bernese Oberland and known for its pure mountain air. The village is car-free - accessible only by mountain railway from Lauterbrunnen. Wengen is situated on a shoulder of Alpine pastures and forests, and offers magnificent views of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Jungfrau mountain range with some of the most spectacular peaks in the Swiss Alps. Tourists dicovered the beauty of this idyllic place in the early 19th century - one of the first visitors was Felix Mendelssohn, the German composer. The first hotel was opened in 1859, and tourism strongly developed at the beginning of the 20th century after completion of the construction of the Wengernalp Mountain Railway. Wengen is well-known for great skiing during the winter months, and is world famous for its annual Alpine Skiing Competition - the Lauberhorn. The Lauberhorn Downhill Race is the longest and one of the technically most challenging on the FIS World Tour. But also non-skiers enjoy the beauty of this region during winter time walking along perfectly kept paths, riding the mountain railway to the Kleine Scheidegg or even up to the Jungfraujoch - the Top of Europe - or, visit the nearby villages of Grindelwald and Muerren. During the summer, Wengen invites to relax and enjoy the natural beauty on numerous hiking paths in the Jungfrau Region. More attractions and activities in Wengen and the Jungfrau region.
